CHAPTER 5. The Growth Years, 1964-70. Introduction of IMTS. On November 1, 1963, as part of the nationwide "narrow banding" of the two way radio spectrum, the FCC split the six MTS VHF mobile telephone channels into eleven, creating enough room (at the time) for more subscribers and newer design equipment.
